UGA Week 7

Today signifies the end of our seventh week at The University of Georgia. I cannot believe that in just two short weeks we will be back heading home. This week seemed to fly by due to having the day off on Monday for the Fourth of July. Although a short week, it surely was eventful. We started out our week on Tuesday by shopping for decorations for our event that we will be hosting this coming Thursday. Because our theme is New England, we decided to follow a nautical theme and incorporate things like shells, fish nets, light houses, and boats; all things that remind me of being home in Connecticut! We spent quite a few hours this week painting light houses and assembling decorations; I can't wait to see it all come together!

On Wednesday, we had the pleasure of meeting with Katrina, in human resources, who explained to us HR's role in Dining Services and gave us a very in depth explanation of how hiring and termination work from her end, her role in being a resource for employees, as well as how she is involved in full timer benefits, workman's comp, and injury reports. Essentially, the large part of her job involves paperwork, however, she truly seemed enthusiastic about her job because she has the opportunity to help employees.

The next day was field trip day! Craig took Maura and I to US Foods in Atlanta, where we got a tour of the warehouse, loading dock, and refrigeration areas. The guy who was giving us the tour is in charge of the safety department at the facility, and explained to us all of the safety procedures that they take to ensure that their customers receive the best quality and safest food possible. One thing that I found most interesting about this facility, was its strive to be the best it possibly can. This facility tracts every mistake, injury, and mix-up that occurs and posts it on the walls for the employees to see, so that together, they can strive to be better. They also take every possible measure to be as safe as possible, which is extremely important when working in such a busy, high volume facility.

Later that day, after our tour, we had lunch at a local place that serves a buffet style lunch of down home southern food, in a very historic colonial home. The food was absolutely delicious, but what makes the place special, is the experience that you have while eating in this beautiful, historic house.

To end the day, we made a quick stop at the Mayfield Dairy and got ice cream! Mayfield is one of the vendors that supplies UGA with its delicious selection of ice cream!

This giant cow most certainly catches your attention from the road!
After our long day of adventures on Thursday, we spent Friday at the Commissary, working in the kitchen. The Commissary supplies the food for the catering events, as well as assembles food for some of the eateries throughout campus, and The Red Clay Cafe. Maura and I had the chance to help with some menu items for catering, such as a humongous batch of baked beans, and fresh strawberry lemonade. Once the kitchen died down a bit, we spent some time making changes to FoodPro recipes for the Commissary before taking a quick break for lunch and continuing to work on our decorations.
That's one giant batch of baked beans!

The final product: Strawberry Lemonade (YUM!)
