Purdue Week 4: Halfway Isn't All the Way, but It's Better than No Way!

Halfway Isn't All the Way, But It's Better Than No Way!

WOW! This past week marks THE HALFWAY point of our internship! It is honestly crazy how fast our internship has flown by! Looking back to our first stroll down State Street on our first night together until now, we've come a long way. We have made this (relatively large) campus our own and have formed some great relationships with students and staff. We may be halfway done with this internship, but our experiences each week are ones we will cherish forever. Thanks again to everyone reading for sharing this journey with us... Soooo here's to week 4!

This week our gang split up, Jeanine and Mary Frances went to Pappy's Sweet Shop at the Purdue Memorial Union while Kristen and Alice went to Windsor Dining Hall.  Pappy's was a fun and fast pace experience where we learned first hand how to make milkshakes and sundaes.  We also worked the front and back of the line where we got some experience on the grills and fryers!  Shannon, the manager, even showed us how to order and keep track of inventory and budgeting using C-BORD (their data base for recipes and supplies).

Meanwhile, at Windsor Dining Hall, Kristen and Alice had the opportunity to work PALS, Purdue Athletes Life Success.  This is a camp set up for children of low income families, therefore, the government pays for the meals they receive at this camp.  Because of this, every child must receive the same exact meal, so for breakfast they get a grain, fruit, and milk.  For lunch they receive a grain, vegetable, fruit, dessert, and milk.  They also get a snack.   We all had the opportunity to work PALS on Friday, and I must say it was a different experience having to set up the trays of food for the kids, compared to the buffet style of service we are used to in the dining halls.

On Thursday, we continued with our recipe testing (or lack there of).  We did some more sorting and checking of inventory, however, Chef Bruce is hopeful that in the future we will be able to knock out a few recipes to make and test!

We finally got a few well deserved days off for the weekend of the Fourth of July!  Alice went to visit her family in Grand Rapids, Michigan, while the rest of us took on Ohio!  We went to a water park in Mason Ohio, and visited Cincinnati later that evening.  We saw fireworks, walked around downtown and even went to a concert in the town square!  Despite the rain showers throughout the day on Sunday, we didn't let that stop us from exploring downtown Cincinnati and the Ohio River. We made our trip educational that day by visiting the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. This was fitting because we were able to learn about key events and people who helped make America free right before the much anticipated holiday of Fourth of July. On our way out of Cincinnati we made sure to stop at Skyline Chili to get some of their highly acclaimed chili dogs and spaghetti chili. All in all, it was a fun way to end week 4 and celebrate our independence!
